St. John's Cancer Program Honored
St. John’s Regional Medical Center will host a celebration for its Cancer Program’s award. St. John’s Cancer Program is one of 66 cancer facilities across the United States to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC).
The celebration will be held in the Mercy Conference Center on Wednesday, June 4, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Speakers will include St. John’s COO, John Mentgen and St. John’s Cancer Committee Chairperson, Dr. Irving LaFrancis.
Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award (OAA) is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the OAA following the on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a Commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program (cancer committee leadership, cancer data management, clinical services, research, community outreach and quality improvement).
In addition, the facility receives a compliance rating for the remaining 29 standards. Sixty-six programs received the OAA as a result of surveys preformed in 2007. This number represents approximately 15 percent of the 453 programs surveyed during this period.
Last fall, St. John’s received a Three-Year Approval with Commendation from the CoC following an on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor. St. John’s demonstrated a Commendation level of compliance in addition to receiving compliance ratings for all other standards evaluated during the survey.
